Wellness Exam Q & A

Why do I need a wellness exam?

Routine wellness exams, or physicals, are critical to protecting your health and well-being at every age. Wellness exams allow your provider to check on your health and give you an opportunity to talk to a medical professional about any concerns you might have.

Your child’s wellness exams give your provider a chance to monitor your little one’s growth and development, including physical, cognitive, and communicative skills. They’re also a convenient opportunity for any necessary shots. As you reach adulthood, routine blood pressure checks and blood panels, help you provider keep an eye on your health. As you get older, you need a wider variety of health screenings to check for signs of cancer and chronic diseases, which become more likely as you age.

What should I expect during a wellness exam?

Wellness exams usually follow a standard sequence. After you check in at the front desk and complete any paperwork, a member of the clinical team calls you back to a treatment room. They check your height, weight and blood pressure and will ask a few questions about any health concerns you might have.

Then you meet with your provider, and they listen to your heart and lungs. They feel your abdomen and look into your eyes, ears, nose, and throat. If you need additional screenings, for example, a Pap smear or pelvic exam during a well-woman exam, your provider will perform these at this time. They can also provide any necessary shots, including flu shots, during your appointment.

Your provider asks about any changes in your health or overall wellness and gives suggestions on how you can improve your overall health and well-being. You could be asked for blood work, either before or after your exam.

How often should I have a wellness exam?

You should have a wellness exam at least once a year. Young children and people who have chronic health conditions will need more frequent check-ups, depending on their age and overall health. Your provider can give you customized advice on how often you should have a wellness exam.
