After investors deposited their cryptocurrency into the project’s smart contract, the fraudsters allegedly exploited a hidden backdoor within the contract and transferred the deposited assets to other wallet addresses. The sudden loss left the victims searching for answers and trying to determine whether their funds could be traced. TECHY FORCE CYBER RETRIEVAL (TFCR) was brought in to assist with the investigation. The process began with collecting transaction hashes, wallet addresses, smart-contract information, screenshots, communications, and other available evidence relating to the investment. TFCR then used blockchain-analysis techniques to examine the transactions and follow the movement of the cryptocurrency between wallets. Investigators can analyze transaction patterns, identify intermediary addresses, and document transfers that may help establish how the stolen assets moved through the blockchain. The investigation highlights an important characteristic of cryptocurrency: although transactions are generally irreversible, many blockchains maintain publicly accessible transaction records. These records can provide investigators with valuable information when reconstructing the movement of digital assets. For victims of fraudulent DAO schemes, preserving transaction information and reporting the incident promptly can be important. Blockchain tracing does not guarantee that stolen cryptocurrency will be recovered, but it can help establish an evidence trail that may support further investigation, exchange intervention, legal proceedings, or law-enforcement action.
