Don’t Let Allergies Win: A Proactive Guide to Allergy Season
Does spring mean itchy eyes, congestion, and nonstop sneezing for you? Seasonal allergies affect millions of Americans every year, and unfortunately, Raleigh, North Carolina, is the seventh-most challenging place to live with seasonal allergies.
The good news? You don’t have to suffer through allergy season. A proactive plan can reduce symptoms, improve your sleep, and help your productivity at work, school, and home.
This month, our team of primary care providers at Select Family Practice and Urgent Care is on a mission to keep allergies from winning.
Here’s your proactive guide to the 2026 allergy season.
Know your triggers
You can’t avoid the triggers you don’t know about! Common seasonal allergy triggers are:
- Tree pollen in early spring
- Grass pollen in late spring and summer
- Ragweed in late summer and fall
- Mold spores in damp environments
Symptoms often include sneezing, nasal congestion, a runny nose, itchy eyes, throat irritation, and sinus pressure.
If your symptoms appear around the same time each year, pollen is likely the culprit. Nonseasonal allergies, such as pet dander and dust mites, can cause symptoms year-round.
Start treatment before symptoms peak
Many people wait until they feel miserable to begin medication. That approach makes symptom control harder.
Guidelines recommend starting intranasal corticosteroids before or at the start of allergen exposure for seasonal allergic rhinitis. This approach can reduce inflammation early and limit the severity of your symptoms.
Reduce your allergen exposure at home
While you can’t control outdoor pollen, you can reduce exposure indoors.
- Keep windows closed during high pollen days
- Shower and change clothes after spending time outside
- Use air conditioning with clean filters
- Wash bedding regularly in hot water
- Wipe off pet paws before they come inside from their walk
You can track the pollen forecast for Raleigh on any weather app.
Recognize when it’s more than allergies
Not every case of congestion is seasonal allergies. Other conditions, including seasonal colds, COVID-19, the flu, and sinus infections, can also cause congestion.
See us for a sick visit if you have:
- Fever
- Thick green or yellow nasal discharge lasting more than 10 days
- Severe facial pain
- Symptoms that worsen after initial improvement
Our team can review your symptoms, order testing, and confirm whether you’re dealing with allergies or a seasonal threat.
When to seek care
If over-the-counter treatments don’t control your symptoms, or if allergies affect your sleep and daily routine, don’t try to push through your symptoms. Allergies can be managed, and our team at Select Family Practice and Urgent Care can help.
Depending on your needs, we may recommend prescription medications, at-home allergy management strategies, or evaluation for underlying sinus issues.
